Mid Hants Railway - 4th March, 1995
A bit of an epic weekend! I was on the DPS support crew at the time, but our charge refused to start on the Friday evening when we arrived due to flat batteries. A charger was eventually obtained, but it could not charge all the cells at the same time, so had to be swapped overnight on a regular basis. Success eventually came around lunchtime, and the railway efficiently organised to get the loco out and in service - possibly also to avoid the shed being completely filled with Deltic clag! The gala was billed as a make or break for diesel events thanks the increasing costs of getting visitors in - all the visitors arrived in one convoy from the Midland Railway Centre to save costs. However, the weather conspired against the organisers, with snow north of London deterring many from travelling, meaning the event still lost money, and as a result there was not another gala here for some time. To add insult to injury, after the event 40012 was deemed unfit to travel back to Butterley due to bogie cracks, and was stranded for some time until a one way ticket was agreed! Mainly 55015s movements are noted, as I was secondman on all that locos trips apart from the the trips from 1630 onwards.
